Mary Temple Grandin is arguably the best-known person with autism. Born on August 29, 1947, Temple Grandin was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, but her parents had different opinions on her. Temple's father wanted her put away in an institution, but her mother thought otherwise and sent her to school. Grandin overcame bullying and worked very hard to build a humane apparatus to help livestock on cattle ranches and redesigned slaughter houses throughout the United States to be humane.
Temple was placed in the Time 100 list of Most Influential People. In a 2010 HBO movie about her life, Claire Danes portrayed this extraordinary woman and received a Golden Globe Award for her performance.
